A referee is the highest authority at individual tournaments and team matches. The referee is present to answer questions regarding the rules of tennis and how they should be interpreted in specific situations. A referee must occasionally make important decisions, and a thorough understanding of the rules is thus of importance. The job requires well-developed competencies within communication, organization and the ability to stay calm during intense situations.
In Denmark, the referee educational pathway is divided into two branches: team match referees and individual tournament referees. The present course covers both branches.
A referee typically has the following responsibilities:
- Make sure that the courts, court accessories and other facilities are up to code.
- Determine and inform players of match formats, balls, courts and other areas of relevance.
- Conduct and publicize draws and tournament programs for tournaments.
- Answer questions that players have before, during and after matches.
- Determine when/if matches should be suspended due to weather conditions and/or insufficient light.
- Issue warnings and/or point/game penalties for code violations or time violations.
